About our site
Something Fishy is an unusual shop in a quaint beach shack on a laid back island. Our mission is to search tirelessly for unique items that reflect the island life so that you might bring a piece of it to yours. We strive to provide excellent customer service and a fun atmosphere while selling neat stuff at the best prices. We serve every price point, from tiny trinkets to amazing treasures.
We promise a distinctive shopping experience with a fish for every reason! Something Fishy is owned and operated by Michael McVearry, a local businessman on the Outer Banks. He has owned the land where the store sits for over 30 years. In addition to the store, the property features a beach house that rents weekly in-season and a bed and breakfast that is open all year.
Mike resides full-time on the third floor of the inn and can often be found on his boat. He does all the purchasing for the shop – suggestions are welcome. The physical location of Something Fishy is an Outer Banks staple. The history of the building itself, located at milepost 10.5 on the beach road, dates back at least half a century.
The earliest known fact about it is that the cottage survived the Ash Wednesday storm of 1962, which was one of the ten worst storms in the United States during the 20th century. We believe at that time the building was a residential residence. Some time later, the cottage became the first location for Nags Head Hammocks, a local company that makes hammocks by hand and still operates today from several locations throughout the area. In the spring of 1996, Sherri Lemnios, a prominent local artist, and her husband, Charles, opened the shop still known today as Something Fishy. Her primary objective was to provide a physical location where she could showcase her artwork. Along the way, she store evolved into one of the notable shopping destinations on the Outer Banks.
